Description
Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak is the latest in a long series of games: in the beginning there was Monster Hunter, then Monster Hunter Rise and now Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak, the sixth main game and the twelfth if all the spin-offs and expansions are included.
About the Game
As always, you are a hunter, tasked with ridding the world of monsters and using their remains as a source of loot to build new armour, improve your weapons – all fourteen from previous Monster Hunter games are available, so you will be able to use your old favourites. The Wirebug returns too, helping you travel, climb and boosting and improving your weapons.
Following on from the end of the last game: Rampage mode was here and has left its mark on the land. After the Rampage comes sunbreak: the hunter is hailed as a hero and peace returns to Kamura. As might be expected, this peace short-lived and ends as a strange monster arrives in the Shrine Ruins.
It is pursued by a Knight from Elgado, called Fiorayne, who explains that the beast is from her land. They work together to defeat the beast, Lunagron – but Fiorayne then explains that her actual purpose in travelling so far was to recruit the Hunter to help Elgado against an even more fearsome creature, Malzeno, which has appeared in the land. Permission is given and the Hunter sets off with Fiorayne.
The Elgado Outpost is an entirely new fame map area, and the Britain-inspired land is packed with new people to meet, monsters to fight and kill and lands to explore. (See below for details of some of the new monsters). The Outpost serves as the game’s hub and trading area, so you will get to know it well.
Long term players can score on a new set of quests, and Wirebugs have exciting new and improved powers too. The Citadel, just outside the Outpost is a new map area, boasting lush forests and icy mountains and everything in between: all, of course, packed with new monsters, animals and creepy-crawlies.
The Nitty Gritty
Along with the new locations, comes improved gameplay. The single player game allows that you can have up to two AI companions: fans of the franchise will be delighted to welcome back their catlike Palico and doglike Palamute. If you prefer one type of pal over the other, you can have any combination you like. Multiplayer mode allows for up to four people and one pal to play along.
Pals are important as they can transport you without using stamina, they can help you in battles and with advice and companionship, and you will soon feel quite lost without one!
Monsters of Elgado (And Friends)
As you might expect, new lands spew forth new monsters and you will battle:
Malzeno*: Sunbreak's elder dragon and the reason that The Hunter was summoned to come to Elgado in the first place
Grangolm*: A big, armoured monkey creature, whose left arm is covered in moss and right arm in magma, meaning he's able to attack with both fire and water when enraged which creates some steamy fun
Lunagron*: A fanged wyvern (a wyvern being a dragon with two legs, and wings instead of arms) which can cover its body with ice on demand to act as body armour, and which rears up to begin slashing with its powerful claws
Blood Orange Bhisaten: a brand new subspecies of the Bhisaten known and feared from previous games, this one throws exploding pine cones
Astalos: an old friend, returning from Monster Hunter Generations, this guy is a flying wyvern which can generate electricity in its horns, wings, and tails, and not for cosmetic purposes either: it is truly devastating when fully charged
*These three monsters together form the Three Lords and the equivalent of ‘boss’ monsters.
