What an iconic trilogy. And the most amazing thing about it is that it really doesn't feel as old as it is.

Besides the small graphics update and higher resolutions this HD collection received, this just feels so... playable. It's fluid game mechanics feel so satisfying and I honestly believe it could even compare to some titles coming out now, almost 20 years later. The main thing that kind of gives it away are the sometimes-awkward fixated camera angles - mostly in the first two parts of this trilogy, but it's almost completely resolved in DMC 3.

So lets talk about what makes this early trilogy so iconic. Emerging from the very first prototype of Resident Evil 4, it's interrelated detailed gothic atmosphere and level designs feel and look amazing, while also being really well thought through. It's a great feeling having to figure out pretty much everything that's going on for yourself, without having waypoints and specific quest lines like every modern game has, and that's one of the wonderfully engaging things these old titles give you.

The combat.. it is so fun. Fast paced badass action is all this game is about. A demon of immaculate powers wielding big ass swords and shooting akimbo guns, or rocket launchers. The action these games provide is on the very edge of all your imaginations, and it challenges and rewards the player to pull off the craziest combos possible. At the same time, these games can be VERY hard, especially considering the DMC 3's Turbo mode - it is mind blowing to say at least and very often unforgivable of any small mistakes. For this reason I warn you that it will surely be a lot of dying and repeating in your playthroughs. But at the same time, even though I've died hundreds of times to them, all of the bosses are just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ amazing.

What impressed me the most is how good DMC 1 still is. It feels so fresh, and it's immersive level design and amazing art direction is probably the strongest point it has. And sure it's dated look is consisted of very low-poly textures, but it's far from being an "ugly" game.

One of the things I do wish for are the updated cinematics, they're pretty much the original low resolution cinematics from the game's first release. The menu has also been mostly unchanged, it's the same 4:3 low resolution menu as in the original games, just completely remapped for an Xbox controller - and I strongly recommend it since it's 100% just plug and play.

This collection does have some things I don't like about it though. DMC 2 for example. It's such a ridiculous game and it's so disconnected from the rest of the trilogy. Everything about it is just so plain, bland and generic. Did anyone at the studio even listen to the feedback from the first one? The game is boring and it's mechanics, like enemy targeting, just feel disgusting, and what makes it even worse is how overused this is in some missions. It seriously makes you rip off your ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ head at times. What is so unsatisfying is that more than half the game you spend fighting everyone from a huge distance, so you just end up spamming your rocket launcher. Where's the fun in that? Next to that, the story? What is even going on? Not even one character in this game gets a proper introduction. It's barely mentioned who the main villain is. And the level design is atrocious - it doesn't get any more uninteresting than this one. It has almost nothing in common with the first and the third part of this trilogy. The only thing about it - it's a very short suffering, sitting at just about 2 or 3 hours of gameplay.
One great thing that I have to mention about DMC 2 is that it probably has the most badass looking Dante in this collection. He absolutely ate that ♥♥♥♥. While mentioning Dante, his characteristics, going from being serious and less talkative in DMC 1 due to the nature of the situation, to his charismatic and comedic appearance in DMC 3 is just great. He's a really well written protagonist and whoever did his performance nailed it.

Some of the mentionable issues I found with DMC 1 and 3, which I honestly don't really mind that much - the voice tracks and subtitles often go out of sync with the cutscenes. You might also get some frame drops in DMC 1 that kind of make your game slow-mo for a couple of seconds.

Even besides DMC 2 and some minor issues, I can't even say how much I recommend this collection. It's a great piece of hack and slash history and it brings back a very nostalgic era where developers truly cared about what they were making. For the best experience - please just skip the second game entirely... Or at least leave it for the last one.

The only thing that prevents a 100 out of this is that DMC2 is awful compared to the other 2 games and any other in the series.

yes even DmC: Devil May Cry.

Other than that the first (Devil May Cry) is great and DMC3 is one of the best ever
  • decent graphics for games of the ps2 era
  • Engaging Gameplay and meccanics
  • DMC2

Had played this game on playstation 2 as a kid. I just hopped on the game on PC and it hasn't lost its touch!! And the fact that it is a collection of the first 3 dmc games at one price is relieving!!
  • Good collection
